memories by grandma

This project encapsulates the recorded memories of my grandmother’s experience of living in Mexico before migrating into the U.S . She explains our family’s living experience in Mexico; the trauma of her parents living during the Mexican Revolution, the pain of working labrous jobs during her adolscene into her adult life, and the hardships that motherhood brings while being a working woman. It describes the hardships and trauma she had to encounter, yet the pride that my grandmother carries with her. Although she experienced very challenging situations, she faced them with immense bravery to help her family.

I had interviewed my grandma and voice-recorded our chat, then transcribed it to create a site using HTML, CSS, and Javascript to add a new memory every hour, totaling twenty-four different memories throughout a day. Each message will never appear in the same space on the screen and will sometimes overlap with other memories to describe how our memories begin to overlap and combine over time with new ones as we live our lives.

This was a very emotional project, not only for me but for my grandmother too. Many difficult memories were shared that my grandmother relived again while retelling me her experiences from her adolescence into her adulthood. These memories are heavily engraved into our family's history and is the backbone of the determination that also fuels me to this day.
