memories by grandma II
manteles
This is Part II of memories by grandma, where I’ve transferred some of her transcribed memories onto small manteles which are tablecloths like the ones I grew up watching her and many of the women in my family make. These memories are printed on linen and sewn together along the edges with a delicate lace trim. One side carries difficult recollections in Spanish from my grandmother’s experiences in Mexico, while the other side holds their English translation.
The project creates a contrast between the softness of a handmade, traditionally “feminine” object and the weight of the stories it holds. It was created with the intention of passing these memories down to younger generations in my family—so we never forget our roots, or my grandmother’s strength.
